When a celebrity is out in public, they know that their picture is going to be taken. It's why what they wear is so important; beyond just a simple form of self-expression, or a chance to be featured on best-dressed lists, it's an opportunity to send a sartorial message – to convey something of great importance without having to say a word.

Jessica Chastain knows this only too well, and this week used her clothing to show support for the women of Iran. The actress was seen arriving for an appearance on a talk show in New York wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the name 'Mahsa Amini' – a 22-year-old Iranian woman whose shocking death sparked global outrage and international protests.

Chastain worked with stylist Elizabeth Stewart on the look, who confirmed on social media that the T-shirt was made by Mr Saturday.

"It's hard not to feel helpless in the face of what is happening in Iran – 15,000 unarmed protestors detained and at risk of execution for demanding basic human rights," Stewart wrote. "Jessica Chastain is trying to give them a voice by wearing this custom tee in honour of Mahsa Amini, who no longer has one."

The actress has been vocal in her support for Iranian women in recent weeks, using her Instagram to highlight the fight for gender equality and basic human rights to her 4.8 million followers. She's also shown similar support for the women of Ukraine.

"Please watch and learn," Chastain wrote in one post. "It can be hard to comprehend what is happening from afar, where we can walk down the street wearing what we please without fear of punishment. #MahsaAmini’s death kicked off protests for basic human rights in Iran that were long overdue."

In September, Mahsa Amini was arrested by so-called 'Guidance Patrol' in Tehran, allegedly for wearing an inappropriate hijab. CCTV videos of the event, released later by the Tehran police, show her collapsing to the ground at the moment of her arrest.

Amini's brother was told she would be taken to a detention centre to undergo a "briefing class" and released shortly afterwards. She never made it. Amini instead arrived at Kasra Hospital, where she died after being in a coma for three days.
